White Spot Disease
Symptoms: Small white spots on the skin, gills, and fins; fish may scratch against objects.
Cause: Parasitic protozoan.
Treatment: Increase water temperature gradually, use ich treatment medications, and ensure good water quality.
Fin Rot
Symptoms: Frayed or decaying fins, often with a white edge; fins may appear red at the base.
Cause: Bacterial infection, often due to poor water quality or injury.
Treatment: Improve water quality, use antibacterial medications, and remove any sources of injury or stress.
Swim Bladder Disease
Symptoms: Difficulty swimming, fish may float to the top or sink to the bottom, swim sideways or upside down.
Cause: Can be due to physical injury, infection, or dietary issues.
Treatment: Adjust feeding practices (e.g., feed peas to relieve constipation), ensure proper water conditions, and in severe cases, use specific treatments recommended by a vet.
Velvet Disease
Symptoms: Gold or rust-colored dust on the skin, rapid gill movement, and lethargy.
Cause: Parasitic dinoflagellate.
Treatment: Use appropriate anti-parasitic medications, increase water temperature, and reduce light exposure.
Dropsy
Symptoms: Swollen body, raised scales, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
Cause: Often a bacterial infection, but can also be due to poor water quality or internal organ failure.
Treatment: Improve water quality, use antibacterial treatments, and isolate affected fish.
Columnaris
Symptoms: White or grayish spots on the mouth, fins, or gills; lesions on the body.
Cause: Bacterial infection (Flavobacterium columnare).
Treatment: Use antibacterial medications, improve water conditions, and ensure proper tank hygiene.
Gill Flukes
Symptoms: Gasping at the surface, rapid gill movement, and lethargy.
Cause: Parasitic flatworms.
Treatment: Use anti-parasitic medications, improve water quality, and ensure good tank hygiene.
